Arts and Academic Awards

My first grader was so excited to go to his AAA program,
jumping up and down, pure happiness.
We went as a family to the event,
which I thought was special for him.

Once we got to the school,
the children were to pick up their ribbon.
A blue ribbon was awarded to the best project
in each category of each grade.
All other participants got a red ribbon.

His category: Photography

As soon as he saw that his ribbon wasn't blue
his attitude changed.
No longer happy
and very sad.

My heart was broken because he was so sad.
I thought I had explained ahead of time that
the color of the ribbon didn't matter
and that Mom and Dad thought his project was amazing.

It's always hard to watch a kid so disappointed. Life's lessons aren't easy to learn. :( Looks like he had fun and did a good job!

I saw you there across the mass of parents and kids. Didn't get over to say hi! We had a first grader do the exact same thing...and now in fourth grade he hasn't participated in it since (no matter how much we try to convince him otherwise). Guess the disappointment was too great!

Tell him we think it is pretty darn cool he won a red ribbon for his photography. Sofia says she likes the color red better anyway. ;)
